Written Answers. - Ballymun (Dublin) Garda Strength.

120.

(Dublin North-West) asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Garda Síochána in Ballymun, Dublin, are so understaffed at the present time that they have difficulty in answering or responding to pleas for help from unfortunates who are either being intimidated or attacked; and the action that he proposes to take to protect the people in the area.

The Garda authorities have informed me that, while there are undoubtedly heavy demands on Garda resources in the Ballymun sub-district, it is not true that the Garda there are having difficulty in responding to requests for assistance in circumstances of the type referred to by the Deputy. The authorities also say that the Garda at Ballymun have not received any complaints from the public recently of failure to respond to such requests other than a phone call made by the Deputy on behalf of a resident of the area in response to which the Garda promptly contacted the person concerned.

As the Deputy will appreciate, the detailed deployment of members of the force is a matter primarily for the Garda authorities. The current Garda strength at Ballymun is the maximum that can be provided at present having regard to overall resources and other demands on Garda Services, but the question of increasing the strength at the centre will be further considered according as the additional manpower being recruited becomes available for assignment.
