Vol. 333 No. 8

Written Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

561.

asked the Taoiseach the total of insured persons who were unemployed as a percentage of insured persons in 1979, 1980 and 1981, inclusive.

Data on the percentage unemployed based on the live register are obtained by taking the ratio of the number of insured persons on the live register to the total insured labour force (excluding the agriculture, fishing and domestic service sectors). On this basis the annual average percentages of insured persons on the live register for 1979, 1980 and 1980 and 1981 are as follows:

Year

Annual average percentage unemployment for insured persons*

1979

9.3

1980

10.3

1981

13.5

* with the introduction of the PRSI scheme in April 1979, it has not as yet been possible to obtain updated estimates of the currently insured population, and therefore the rates shown are subject to revision at a later date.

562.

asked the Taoiseach the seasonally adjusted monthly rate of increase in unemployment between December, 1979 and July, 1981 and July, 1981 and January, 1982.

The seasonally adjusted live register total increased by an average of 2.2 per cent per month between December 1979 and July 1981; and by an average of 1.7 per cent per month between July 1981 and January 1982.

563.

asked the Taoiseach if he will indicate the number of registered unemployed in the week ended 27 March 1982 in the following employment exchange areas: Killarney, Killorglin, Cahirciveen, Dingle and Kenmare; and if he will indicate the percentage of the population they represent in each case.

The following table gives the number of persons on the live register on Friday, 26 March 1982 for the local employment offices listed.
