Vol. 334 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Donegal Sea Rescue Services.

392.

asked the Minister for Transport the rescue service available in County Donegal to cater for sea emergencies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Rescue Service in sea emergencies is provided in County Donegal by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution; which has a lifeboat station at Arranmore, the Coast Life Saving Service stations at Mulroy, Tory Island and Greencastle and the Coast Radio Station at Malin Head. The Naval Service and the Air Corps also provide assistance when requested to do so, as well as any other vessels that may be in the vicinity.

In addition, the Commissioners of Irish Lights make their lighthouses at Tory Island, Inishtrahull and Fanad Head available for communication and observation purposes when sea emergencies arise. Garda Síochána stations in the coastal districts organise local rescue efforts and assist in local identification and reporting. The functions of all these bodies in a marine emergency are co-ordinated by the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre at Shannon Airport.
