Vol. 334 No. 3

Written Answers. - Careers Guidance Teachers.

476.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the number of fully qualified career guidance teachers employed in the second level educational sector; (b) if he will provide a breakdown of these as between vocational schools, secondary schools etc; (c) the number of career guidance teachers available to all regional technical colleges and the number in each college; and (d) the name and number of each second level educational institution that does not have the services of a full-time career guidance teacher.

In the last school year, 1980-81, 500 fully qualified guidance teachers held special posts as careers guidance teachers in second level schools. 354 of these were serving in secondary schools, 102 with vocational education committees, 30 in community schools and 14 in comprehensive schools.

There is no provision for special posts of careers guidance teachers in regional technical colleges.

It would not be in accordance with normal practice to furnish the names of individual secondary, community or comprehensive schools which do not have special posts held by guidance teachers. The number of such schools is 174. In the case of vocational schools the assignment of the quota of teachers is to the vocational education committees and it is a matter for each committee involved to arrange for the distribution of the service of the teachers as they see fit.
