asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the great need of a person for a telephone service for a company (details supplied) in Dublin 7 which could employ more people if a service was available; and if he will give this application every consideration.

I am aware of the application. Service will be provided as soon as possible but it is unlikely that the necessary cabling can be carried out for about a year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when officials from the accounts section of his Department intend to meet telephone subscribers in the Ardrahan area of County Galway; and when they intend to reply to the letter from Deputy Fahey which was sent several weeks ago in connection with this matter.

A representative of the Department will meet telephone subscribers in the Ardrahan area shortly, as soon as a mutually convenient time can be arranged. A reply will be sent to the Deputy when this meeting has been arranged.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a person (details supplied) in Ringsend, Dublin 4, will receive a telephone service which was applied for in May 1976; if he is aware that the applicant has been waiting six years for service; and if he will now ensure that a telephone is installed as a matter of priority.

Service will be provided as soon as possible for the person named, who applied in April 1978, but it is unlikely that the necessary cabling can be carried out for about a year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will make immediate arrangements to have necessary repairs carried out to a telephone (details supplied) in Palmerstown, Dublin 20; and the reason the subscriber has not succeeded in having these repairs effected to date despite several reports having been made in the matter.

The repairs have been effected and service is now satisfactory. Unfortunately because of a backlog of faults in the "01" area, I regret that there has been a delay in repairing them.

Applications for transfer to the Galway area have been received from some trainee installers serving at Naas. Transfers as between engineering districts are made in accordance with arrangements agreed with the union representing the grades concerned and the applicants have been informed in regard to these arrangements.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in the provision of a telephone for a person (details supplied) in County Meath who employs eight people and who has been seeking a connection for four years.

I am sorry that it has not been possible to meet this application, which was received in January 1980, because of the extensive linework required to provide service and the volume of engineering work on hands and awaiting attention in the district.

Service will be provided as soon as possible but it is unlikely that it will be possible to do so for about a year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in the provision of a telephone for a person (details supplied) in County Meath who needs the service for business purposes; whether applicants who need service for business purposes are given priority treatment, the usual length of the delay in such cases; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is expected that service will be provided about the end of this year. It is not possible to provide it earlier because of the very extensive linework required to provide service and the volume of engineering work on hands and awaiting attention in the district.

Applicants who need telephone service for business are given priority treatment where it is possible to do so. The time taken to provide service varies in accordance with the amount of work involved, the overall workload in the district and the availability of staff and other resources, such as exchange equipment.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether a person (details supplied) in County Cork will be allocated a telephone as he applied over three-and-a-half years ago and was subsequently informed that his application had been mislaid.

It is expected that service will be provided for the person named, who applied in January 1981, towards the end of this year.

There is no record of an application by the person named prior to January 1981 nor is there any record of his having been told by an officer of my Department that his application had been mislaid.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the 1982 edition of the Telephone Directory (Parts 1 and 2) will be available.

It is planned to distribute the 1982 telephone directories as follows: Telephone Directory, Part 1, in June; Telephone Directory, Part 2, in July; Classified Directory, Part 1, in July; Classified Directory, Part 2, in August.

573.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is expected that directory inquiries will be computerised.

A computerised directory inquiry service is in operation at four of the 16 auto-manual telephone exchanges in the country and plans are well advanced for the provision of the service at a further seven. The service will be provided at the remaining five centres when necessary engineering works have been completed.

Towards the end of this year.

580.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a person (details supplied) in Dublin will be allocated a telephone as she is 78 years old, lives alone and is virtually housebound.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if advance copies of the 1982 Telephone Directory have been circulated; and, if so, if he will give the number of copies circulated and to whom they were circulated.

About 3,300 copies of Part I of the 1982 Telephone Directory were issued in error in advance of general distribution to telephone subscribers in parts of Birr, Drogheda, Edgeworthstown, Gorey, Kenmare, Killarney, Lanesborough and Navan and the "01" area. The number issued is quite small relative to the total proposed distribution of 700,000 copies.

583.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will now approve and implement the works necessary to enable subscribers in the Achill Sound and Mulrany auto-exchange areas, County Mayo, to avail themselves finally of automatic dialling facilities.

The works necessary to provide automatic telephone service for subscribers in the Achill Sound and Mulrany exchange areas have been approved. The buildings to house the new exchanges have been completed and installation of the automatic equipment has been contracted for.

The present forecast is that conversion to automatic working is likely to take place towards the end of 1983. However, the contractor has been requested to try to bring forward the completion of installation dates for both exchanges so that automatic service could be provided about mid-1983, but it is not yet possible to say if this can be done.
