Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Superannuation Scheme.

634.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the provision being made to fund the superannuation scheme of employees in the new State-sponsored bodies for postal and telecommunications services.

The new State-sponsored bodies will be liable in respect of service rendered by their staff as from the day the bodies are set up. The provision required to cover this liability will enable the companies to meet the costs of pensions of postal and telecommunications staff for a considerable number of years.

The Exchequer will accept liability on a contingent basis in respect of existing pensions and of service rendered by staff in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs before their transfer to the bodies. This contingent liability may be drawn on when in any year either company is unable to meet pension costs from its own pension fund.
