Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Monaghan Garda Strength.

985.

andMr. Fitzpatrick (Cavan-Monaghan) asked the Minister for Justice if it is a fact that the strength of the divisional headquarters of the Garda Síochána in Monaghan town has been reduced; if he will give particulars of the number of all ranks stationed there on 1 January 1982 and at the present time; and if he will take steps to bring the divisional headquarters up to full strength.

The detailed deployment of Garda manpower is a matter for the Garda authorities and the strength assigned to the various stations is reviewed from time to time to take account of changing needs and circumstances.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, following a review of the police needs of all areas, there has been a redeployment of resources which has resulted in a reduction in the strength assigned to Monaghan station. The strength of all ranks stationed at Monaghan on 21 June 1982 was 82, as compared with 89 on 1 January 1982.

The Garda authorities have no proposals at present to increase the strength at Monaghan but the police needs of the area will be taken into account when the additional gardaí currently in training and being recruited become available for assignment to the various centres.
