asked the Minister for Finance the cost to the State of the constitutional referendum held in 1979; the projected cost of holding a referendum this year; and the additional costs, if any, that will be incurred if such a referendum deals with more than one issue.

The cost to the Exchequer of the 1979 referendum was about £540,000. The estimated cost to the Exchequer of a referendum later this year is about £700,000. A limited change in the number of issues dealt with in a referendum would not affect the cost substantially.
