Vol. 336 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

9.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in sanctioning the Oranmore sewerage scheme, County Galway.

Preliminary proposals for this scheme have been approved, in principle, by my Department. This approval was subject to agreement on the phasing of the scheme and to discussion of the proposed method of sewage disposal between the technical advisers of my Department and the county council. Following these discussions technical investigations have been carried out locally. I understand that the results of the investigations will be submitted to my Department for approval. If these prove satisfactory, the council may proceed to prepare contract documents for the scheme.

10.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the deplorable state of the building industry in County Galway; and if the Government will provide the necessary finance for the following projects that have been deferred: Galway city water supply scheme; Athenry sewerage scheme; Ballinasloe UDC water supply scheme; and Galway County Council western regional water supply scheme.

While the building industry nationally is experiencing some difficulties through the effects of recession, the worst of these effects are cushioned by the continuing high level of public investment in the industry which was boosted by the additional provisions of the recent budget. I have no information to suggest that the situation in Galway is different from the national situation.

My Department issued approval to the acceptance of a tender for contract number 3 of the Galway city water supply scheme, to Galway Corporation on 27 January 1982. A Local Loans Fund loan of £400,000 was sanctioned for this scheme on 31 March 1982.

The tenders for the remaining three schemes referred to by the Deputy are under consideration in my Department.
