Vol. 336 No. 6

Written Answers. - Business Training Courses.

508.

asked the Minister for Education if he will outline the training or educational courses provided under his aegis specifically to assist people in setting up a business of their own for the first time.

One of the aims of courses in the business studies/commerce areas in the curriculum of second and third level schools is the development of initiative and the familiarisation of students with matters pertaining to business enterprise and management.

The SPIRAL project in Shannon, which was one of a small number of pilot projects run under the aegis of the EEC in connection with the transition from school to work involved the students in practical experience in the establishment and management of mini-companies.

At third level particular components of courses are often relevant in this context. By way of example, it may be stated that

(i) the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Commerce has a large component entitled "Enterprise Development";

(ii) the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, offers a part-time two year evening programme leading to a diploma in business management. This course was specifically designed for proprietors and employees of business in the mid-west region wishing to develop the management skills required in running a small indigenous enterprise.
