Written Answers. - Family Planning Act.

asked the Minister for Health the number of doctors in the Republic of Ireland operating the Health (Family Planning) Act 1979, in particular the number of doctors who prescribe or authorise all methods of contraception.

The information available would indicate that most family doctors provide family planning services, as defined in the Act, and prescribe or authorise any necessary contraceptives. Problems in relation to these services have not been reported from any area.

asked the Minister for Health the number of pharmacists in the Republic of Ireland operating the Health (Family Planning) Act 1979, and supplying all methods of family planning.

Pharmacies in 136 centres throughout the country dispense contraceptives. Some centres have more than one pharmacy.

asked the Minister for Health the amount of money given in grant-aid to natural family planning agencies since the passing of the Health (Family Planning) Act 1979.

Grants paid amounted to £70,000.

asked the Minister for Health the number of doctors who have received theoretical and practical training in family planning.

About 500 doctors have attended formal training courses in family planning, half of whom had theoretical training while the remainder had both theoretical and practical training.
