Vol. 337 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leaseholders' Rights.

15.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will introduce legislation to protect the rights of leaseholders whose leases have less that 15 years to run; and when such legislation will be introduced.

I assume that the subject matter of the Deputy's question is related to a fairly recent decision of the Supreme Court. This decision has affected the position of some tenants, though not all, in the category described in the question but also has implications for other classes of tenants. I have the whole area involved under examination, in consultation with the Landlord and Tenant Commission, and I intend to put proposals in the matter to the Government as soon as possible. I cannot at this stage indicate a time scale nor can I anticipate what the Government's decision will be. I can, however, assure the Deputy that the matter is being actively pursued.
