Vol. 337 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Security.

16.

asked the Minister for Justice if his Department or the Garda Síochána have ever been consulted by any official organisation or any public agency regarding the security of their telephone lines; and, if so, by whom.

I am not aware of any such case but as the response to any such approach, as far as my Department are concerned at all events, would have been that the matter was one to be raised with the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, it is possible that, over the years, there may have been some such cases of which my Department would have no record or recollection.

I have been informed by Garda headquarters that they are unaware of any such approach to the Garda but I assume that the possibility of some unrecorded and forgotten incidents must also arise with them.

I might add that, even if I were aware of such an approach, I would not be free to identify the source as requested in the question as that would be a breach of confidence.
