Vol. 337 No. 5

Written Answers. - Comparative Unemployment Rates.

460.

asked the Minister for Labour the information he has in his Department, in the form of sample surveys or any other source, of comparative unemployment rates in different parts of Dublin city.

None of the surveys carried out by my Department provides the basis for calculating comparative unemployment rates in different parts of Dublin city.

A number of occasional surveys, mainly on the subject of labour availability, carried out by my Department in various areas of Dublin give information on the numbers seeking work and, in some cases, sufficient data to calculate unemployment rates.

Since 1979 surveys on labour availability were carried out in Rialto and the Dublin inner city area to ascertain the level and characteristics of the available labour supply. The Rialto survey identified 350 people (184 males and 166 females) who would take up employment in the Rialto area if jobs were available. The Dublin inner city survey identified 1,111 people (715 males and 396 females) who would take up employment in the Dublin inner city area if jobs were available. Neither survey, however, provided information on unemployment rates in the areas covered.

The National Manpower Service carried out last year a sample survey of second-level school leavers in the 1979-80 school year to establish their employment and other destinations. The main national results have been published. I am considering, however, the question of whether some disaggregation of the results should be compiled.

The Deputy will be aware, of course, that the official agency which complies information on unemployment levels is the Central Statistics Office.
