Vol. 337 No. 5

Written Answers. - Bray (Wicklow) Schools for Handicapped.

642.

asked the Minister for Education how his Department is funding the building of two schools for the handicapped in a residential setting at Bray, County Wicklow when the recently published Government report on education for the physically handicapped is highly critical of such residential settings and recommends their replacement by home type settings.

I presume the report to which the Deputy refers is the report on The Education of Physically Handicapped Children which was published in March 1982. Observations are made in the report in relation to the nature and location of residential accommodation for physically handicapped pupils.

The premises referred to in the question from the Deputy are for the purpose of the provision of improved school facilities for children in an existing residential situation and authorisation for the placing of the relevant contract was given in 1981.
