Vol. 338 No. 1

Written Answers. - Avoca Mines Redundancies.

395.

andMr. Keating asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he is aware of the present situation of employees of Avoca Mines; and if, in view of the apparently arbitrary manner in which the work-force at Avoca were treated including the lack of any prior knowledge of or consultation with them in regard to their employment, he will ensure that fair redundancy payments and other settlement terms will be arranged.

I am aware, of course, of the situation of the employees of Avoca Mines Ltd. who became disemployed following cessation of State support of the mine at the end of July 1982.

As regards the question of redundancy payments and other settlement terms, I understand that the receiver has accorded their full legal entitlements to the disemployed workers. I also understand that the Labour Court recently issued a recommendation on the question of further employment severance payments to the company and to the trade union interests concerned who were the parties involved in a Labour Court hearing in the matter. As a non-party to the hearing I have not yet been officially advised of the court's recommendation.
