asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, the number of (a) oak, (b) beech and (c) other deciduous trees felled in each of the ten years up to 1981 by (1) the forestry section of his Department; (2) private persons or firms with his permission; and (3) private persons or firms without his permission; and the number of trees in those categories planted in the same years by his Department and by private interests.
Written Answers. - Tree Felling and Planting.
Records are not compiled in such a way as to provide the precise degree of detail requested but I trust the information given below will meet the Deputy's requirements:
FELLING OF DECIDUOUS TREES
The quantity of deciduous trees felled annually by the Forest and Wildlife Service is such a relatively minor proportion of total fellings as not to warrant the keeping of separate records. The vast bulk of deciduous trees felled are on privately owned lands. Details of such fellings are set out in Table A

Note: Above figures relate to felling carried out under limited felling licences only (Forestry Act 1946, Section 40). As regards general felling licences (Forestry Act 1946, Section 49), a break-down as between different species is not recorded. Details of unlicensed fellings are not available.
PLANTING OF DECIDUOUS TREES
Details of such plantings by the Forest and Wildlife Service and by the private sector are set out in Tables B and C respectively.
