Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 955 and 956 together.

As the Deputy will be aware, early release is discretionary and is granted or not on the basis of my appraisal of the different facts of each individual case. A few parliamentary questions have been put down on individual cases in the past and information on them has been given in reply. Those cases, however, might be regarded as being of more than usual public interest. I do not think that, as a general rule, it is appropriate to use the parliamentary question procedure as a method of obtaining information on the use of the discretionary power in question.

I can say that one of the two offenders in question is now unlawfully at large and is being sought by the Garda. The Deputy was given a reply by letter to an inquiry he made in November in the other case and a further letter will be sent to him shortly.
