Vol. 339 No. 4

Written Answers. - Urban District Council for Tallaght (Dublin).

459.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals regarding the establishment of an urban district council for Tallaght, County Dublin.

460.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will immediately introduce the legislation necessary to grant urban district council status to the Tallaght area of County Dublin thereby allowing the people of Tallaght to have some control over their local affairs.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 459 and 460 together. Under present legislation a town must first be established as a town with town commissioners before it can attain urban district status. The initiative for such a move must originate locally. To date, no application for the establishment of town commissioners in Tallaght has been received by my Department. The question of urban district status for the area would need to be considered in the context of the local government structures in the Dublin area generally.
