The subscriber's account query was fully investigated and a rebate was agreed with the subscriber in November last, as a gesture of goodwill.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the telephone exchanges for Drimnagh, Walkinstown and Terenure, Dublin will become operational, if they are not already so; and the number of lines which will be available at each exchange.

A new telephone exchange with an initial capacity of 12,000 subscribers lines to serve the combined Crumlin, Drimnagh and Walkinstown areas is expected to be brought into service at Crumlin about the end of next year. Interim relief for these areas is being provided by means of mobile exchange units on the Crumlin site; one 1,000 line unit became operational on 12 November 1982, a second unit of 600 line capacity will be brought into service next week, and a further 1,000 line unit will be provided later this year.

A new exchange with an initial capacity of 10,000 subscribers lines is expected to be brought into service at Terenure about October next. It will replace the existing exchange which serves approximately 6,300 subscribers lines.

The figures are:—

(a) 48,000 of which some 6,000 are at a stage where service has been offered or is about to be offered.

Records are not maintained in a form that would enable the breakdown requested to be provided without a disproportionate expenditure of staff time.

It may be helpful to the Deputy to know that the Dublin 6 area is served largely by the Rathmines and Terenure exchanges; the Dublin 8 area is served largely by Ship Street exchange and the Dublin 12 area is served largely by Walkinstown exchange. The number of waiting applicants in these exchange areas is as follows: Rathmines, 1,800; Terenure, 700; Ship Street, 4,500; Walkinstown, 3,000.

It is expected that there will be a substantial improvement in the telephone service to Renvyle subscribers when a new trunk cable between Cleggan and Letterfrack and a new radio link between Clifden and Galway are completed. It is hoped that both schemes will be completed by the end of the year. There should be a further substantial improvement in service when automatic service is provided for Renvyle subscribers in late 1984.

There are 36 telephone exchanges in County Clare. These serve over 11,200 subscriber telephone lines. Thirteen exchanges serving 7,800 subscriber lines have automatic telephone service. The remaining 23 exchanges are manual and serve 3,400 subscribers. These are scheduled for conversion to automatic working during 1983 and 1984 as follows:

Ballyvaughan, Bell Harbour, Burrin, Carron, Craggagh, Ennistymon, Kilfenora, Lahinch, Lisdoonvarna.

1984

Carrigaholt, Cooraclare, Doonbeg, Feakle, Kilkee, Kilmihill, Kilrush, Knock, Miltown-Malbay, Mountshannon, Querrin, Quilty, Scarriff, Whitegate.

Additional trunk cabling will be provided on 21 routes in the county in 1983.

Forecasts for the provision of automatic service are based on the assumption that due dates for completion of contract works for buildings, equipment, etc. will be adhered to within reasonable limits.

There are 350 waiting applications at exchanges in County Clare. It is expected that service will be provided for most of the applicants involved before the end of this year. The remaining applications will be attended to progressively over the following six to 12 months. It would not be appropriate to furnish names and addresses without the consent of the applicants.
