Vol. 339 No. 7

Written Answers. - Passport Restrictive Business Clause.

445.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason for the restrictive business clause newly inserted on the passport of a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath.

Limerick East): Article 5 (8) of the Aliens Order, 1946, as amended by the Aliens (Amendment) Order, 1975 provides that the Minister for Justice may “...attach such conditions as to duration of stay and engagement in business in the State as he may think fit to the grant of leave to land or leave to stay in the State....”

It is standard practice to endorse an alien's passport (other than that of a national of a member state of the EEC) with the condition that the holder does not engage in any business or profession without the Minister's permission: a time-condition of up to one year is also customary. Annual renewal is a mere formality.
