Written Answers. - School Improvements.

273.

asked the Minister for Education if she will approve as a matter of urgency a grant for an extension to Runamote national school, County Roscommon; and the reasons for the delay in proceeding with this project.

A grant has been sanctioned towards the cost of an extension to Runamote national school, County Roscommon. I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that working drawings are being prepared at present.

274.

asked the Minister for Education if she will sanction grants for extra rooms in the secondary school at Ballycastle, County Mayo; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A recent application for an extension for this school is at present under consideration in my Department. A decision on the matter will be made as soon as possible.

275.

asked the Minister for Education if grants will be made available and early payment made to the Sisters of Mercy in respect of their secondary school, Belmullet, County Mayo, for work carried out to the building.

The building work carried out at the Convent of Mercy secondary school, Belmullet, County Mayo, was done without the prior approval of my Department. However, the case is under examination to see in what way financial assistance may be given to the school.

276.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the urgent need for additional accommodation at St. Mary's secondary school, Ballina, County Mayo; if sanction will soon be given to start work; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Manager of St. Mary's secondary school, Ballina, County Mayo, was authorised recently to have working drawings prepared for a major extension of the school. Sanction for the commencement of the construction work cannot be given until the remaining pre-contract stages of planning have been completed.
