Vol. 340 No. 1

Written Answers. - Group Drainage Scheme.

320.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is proposed to commence work on the Lough Carra section of the Marks group drainage scheme; if an agreement has now been reached with all interested parties on the extent of the work to be undertaken, the final retention level of the take itself and the measures to be undertaken to deal with environmental and wildlife problems attached to the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is expected that work on the Lough Carra section of the Corrib-Mask-Robe catchment drainage scheme will start shortly. The process of consultation with interested parties, required under the provisions of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, was carried out by the Commissioners of Public Works. It is the intention to maintain the present normal summer level range of Lough Carra (68.0 feet O.D.-68.5 feet O.D.). The winter levels will be maintained as far as possible below 69.0 feet O.D.

All possible measures designed to ensure the minimum of interference with environmental and wildlife interests in the area will be implemented by the Commissioners and in this connection the work will be monitored by the Department of Fisheries and Forestry. Any necessary remedial works will be carried out, where possible, as part of the scheme.
