Vol. 340 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Wexford Land Transfer.

430.

asked the Minister for Justice when a transfer of land will be expedited for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford.

, Limerick East): Registration was completed on 28 January 1983.

I think I ought to take this opportunity to put it on the record of the House that the only possible way in which the flow of work in an office of the nature and size of the Land Registry can and ought to be managed is on the basis that applications for registration are dealt with in order of receipt, subject to the qualification that, where it is shown that hardship will result from delay, special efforts will be made to deal with the case as early as possible. Obviously priority can be given to any particular case only at the expense of other cases and, in assessing whether a case should be taken out of its turn, the staff in the Land Registry must have regard not only to the facts of the case itself but to those of perhaps hundreds of others.

I would not wish it to be thought that I would be willing to interfere in order to secure priority for cases irrespective of the merits and I intend to ensure that the fact that a Parliamentary Question is asked about a case does not operate to give the case priority.
