Vol. 341 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers . - County Donegal AnCO Courses .

27.

asked the Minister for Labour (a) the range of AnCO courses proposed for Gweedore and Letterkenny centres, County Donegal; and (b) the number of places available for each course.

: As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose to circulate it with the Official Report.

: I presume from what the Minister said in his tabular statement that it is his intention to continue with the courses in the Gweedore training centre when the Letterkenny training centre comes on stream later this year.

: I can assure the Deputy of that.

: May I——

: The Minister's reply is in the form of a tabular statement and it is only possible to ask a supplementary question to get further information arising out of the answer given by the Minister. If that answer is in the form of a tabular statement there does not seem to be any point in asking supplementary questions.

: My motive in putting down this question was to ensure that the opening of the new centre in Letterkenny would not affect the centre in Gweedore. It is possible that I worded my question in the wrong way but perhaps the Minister would give me an assurance that in no way would west Donegal be affected as a result of the centre being opened in Letterkenny. I am not trying to prevent any courses being run in Letterkenny; there could be overlapping if necessary, but I ask the Minister to take a particular interest in the Gaeltacht.

: I am sure the opening of the Letterkenny centre will benefit all Donegal.

: May I ask the Minister——

: The Deputy should put down another question. The Deputy is asking supplementary questions with blinkers on because he does not know the answer.

: To be fair to the Deputy, I asked a question and I think the Minister assured the House that the future of the Gweedore centre will be all right, even when Letterkenny comes on train.

: I said AnCO will continue to operate in Gweedore.

: I have a special interest in this question.

: A question, please, Deputy McGinley.

: As the Minister is aware, Gweedore has been established as a permanent centre since 1972. Can he give us a guarantee that when the Letterkenny centre comes on stream——

: He has given it to Deputy Gallagher.

: Will Gweedore maintain its status as a permanent training for Gaeltacht areas?

: When the Letterkenny centre comes on stream the following courses will be run through the medium of Irish at the Gweedore centre: apprentices: carpentry and joinery, fitter or electrical; adults: construction skills, office procedures and welding/fabrication.

: For future reference it would be my ruling that when a question is answered by way of tabular statement supplementaries do not arise.

: In fairness and because of what has developed, perhaps through our fault, part of the reply has been read. In these circumstances I am asking that the full reply be read.

: Question Time is over. The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper for Tuesday next.
