Vol. 341 No. 8

Written Answers . - Grant Payments .

585.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason a house improvement grant is not being paid to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and if he is entitled to a sewerage grant as no work had been commenced on that aspect of the work.

: Grants in respect of the provision of a chimney and bathroom cannot be allowed in this case because, contrary to a qualifying condition of the scheme, the work had commenced before an inspection of the house was carried out The applicant has been so informed. The file is with my Department's inspector for a report on the applicant's eligibility for a grant in respect of the provision of sewerage facilities. On receipt of this report, the matter will be finalised as quickly as possible.

586.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a £1,000 new house grant and mortgage subsidy will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick; and the reason for the delay.

: There has been no undue delay in my Department in dealing with this case. The file is with the inspector for investigation and report with a view to payment of the grant if in order. A grant will only be paid when an inspection establishes that the house has been satisfactorily completed and occupied and all other conditions applying to the grant scheme have been complied with. Payment of the first phase of the subsidy will be made following the receipt from the applicant of the appropriate claim form.

asked the Minister for the Environment when a £1,000 new house grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork; and the reason for the delay.

: There was no undue delay in dealing with this case. The grant was paid recently.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that the maximum disabled person's house grant available in the Galway area is £2,400 whereas the maximum in other local authority areas is £4,000; if he will ensure that the maximum grant of £4,000 is available in all local authority areas; and if he will make a statement on this matter.

: I am not so aware. Under the disabled persons grants scheme, a housing authority is empowered, in accordance with the Housing Regulations, 1980, to pay a grant not exceeding the approved costs of the work in the case of a local authority house and two-thirds of the approved cost in any other case. It is, accordingly, at the discretion of a housing authority to determine, within the above limits, the grant payable in an individual case. My Department's role in the scheme is confined to recouping to local authorities a proportion of their expenditure up to a maximum of £2,000 in any particular case.

589.
