Vol. 341 No. 10

Written Answers . - Abattoir By-Law Penalties .

304.

asked the Minister for Agriculture his proposals, if any, to increase the maximum fine from £5 to £500 for breaches in the abattoir by-laws to conform with the new by-law regulations which have been approved by his Department for Dublin Corporation in order to give teeth to the new regulations which have been necessitated by the gross abuse of the previous by-laws; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

305.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will give urgent consideration to increasing the maximum fines for breaches in the by-laws on abattoirs from £5 to £500 in view of the dangers to health at present posed by the inability of veterinary staff to take effective action against abattoir owners who are in breach of the existing by-laws on hygiene; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: I propose to take Questions Nos. 304 and 305 together.

The process of approving the new slaughterhouse by-laws submitted by Dublin Corporation will be completed soon. The general situation regarding slaughterhouses for the domestic market is being reviewed at present and the Deputy's suggestion for increased fines has been noted for consideration in that context.
