Vol. 341 No. 10

Written Answers . - Dublin School for Hearing Impaired Children .

728.

asked the Minister for Education the current position in regard to the proposal for the construction of a community school for those with impaired hearing on the site offered by the Dominican Sisters, Cabra, Dublin 7 in the mid-seventies.

: The post-primary needs of the hearing impaired children are catered for separately within St. Joseph's Special School for hearing impaired boys and St. Mary's Special School for hearing impaired girls. A recommendation that "The Irish Christian Brothers and the Dominican Sisters co-operate in the establishment and management of a co-educational post-primary school" was made in a report published in 1972 on "The Education of Children who are handicapped by Impaired Hearing". In the course of an informal discussion in the mid-seventies the Dominican Sisters indicated their willingness to offer a site for a community school type provision. No formal proposals in this regard, however, were received by my Department. In view of recent representations I am arranging to have the matter further examined.
