Vol. 342 No. 5

Written Answers. - Eastern Health Board.

658.

asked the Minister for Health if he will issue a reply to the representations made by Deputy Vincent Brady on 27 September last enclosing a copy of his representations to the Eastern Health Board regarding fire escape facilities at a nursing home (details supplied) in Dublin.

Representations were made by my predecessor in October 1982 to his colleague the then Minister for the Environment about difficulties experienced by a number of private mental hospitals, including Highfield Nursing Home, in having inspections carried out by their local fire officer. A reply was received in November 1982 from the Minister for the Environment stating that the fire authorities involved had been asked to examine these cases as expeditiously as possible and to furnish their report. A further letter was received in February 1983 from the Department of the Environment saying that a reply was still awaited from Dublin Corporation in respect of the hospitals in the Dublin area.

My Department have again, this month, written to the Department of the Environment expressing grave concern at the delay and asking that the inspection of these hospitals be carried out at an early date by the fire officers. As soon as I have a report on the matter I will be in touch with the Deputy.
