Vol. 343 No. 1

Written Answers. - Referendum Date.

381.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the cost of the proposed referendum to amend the Constitution in relation to abortion and the proximity of the local elections, elections for the European Parliament and a Presidential Election, he will defer the referendum to a later date.

Section 8 of the Referendum Act, 1942, provides that whenever a Bill to amend the Constitution is passed or deemed to be passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas, the Minister for the Environment may make an order fixing polling day. The polling day must not be less than 30 days or more that 90 days after the date of the order. There is no time limit prescribed within which the order must be made. The Deputy may be assured that account will be taken of all the relevant considerations in coming to a decision.
