Vol. 343 No. 7

Personal Explanation by the Taoiseach.

I have given the Taoiseach permission to make a personal explanation.

I wish to make a personal explanation to the House in relation to information which I supplied yesterday and which I have since discovered was in one respect incorrect. On the basis of information supplied by the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs who was speaking from his recollection of events that occurred about six months ago, I told the House that changes had been made in one, not two, medical certificates. In fact a change was made at the top of two medical certificates in respect of the same case which were attached together with other papers relating to that case. I regret this inaccuracy of detail in respect of this matter. The Minister's statement with respect to the circumstances in which this event occurred is otherwise unaffected.

A Cheann Comhairle——

I will clarify the position before we go on. The matter of personal explanations is covered widely by my predecessors and it is specifically stated and has been ruled in the past that no questions may be asked and no debate can arise. That ruling has been given on numerous occasions.

I take it I can raise it on the Order of Business.

We will see when we come to the Order of Business.
