Vol. 343 No. 7

Written Answers. - Public Service Athletes.

638.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the arrangements that were made to facilitate persons in the public service who are members of the 1983 Lions Rugby tour to New Zealand; and whether similar arrangements will be made for persons in the public service who might be selected as members of the 1984 Irish Olympic team.

With regard to the rugby tour referred to I am pleased to say that the Government decided, in the exceptional circumstances, that Captain Ciaran Fitzgerald of the Permanent Defence Forces be allowed special leave with pay, additional to normal entitlements, of 46 days, to enable him to participate as captain of the touring team.

With regard to the 1984 Irish Olympic team, the facilities to be granted to public service participants will be decided upon at the appropriate time.
