Vol. 343 No. 11

Written Answers. - Dublin North City Garda Strength.

731.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí serving in each Garda station in the north city centre area of Dublin in 1982, at present and the numbers proposed to be available in each station within the next 12 months; and if he will give details of the number of extra gardaí to be made available on the beat in this area.

Limerick East): The north city centre area of Dublin is served by Store Street, Fitzgibbon Street, Mountjoy and the Bridewell stations. The Garda Commissioner has furnished the following details of Garda strength at these stations on 31 December 1982, and at present:

A total of 16 newly-trained gardaí were assigned to Store Street, Fitzgibbon Street and the Bridewell stations on 3 June, and it is understood that a further eight newly-trained members will be assigned to these stations on 1 July.

The detailed deployment of Garda manpower is of course a matter for the Garda authorities who have indicated that it is not possible at this stage to say what further additional manpower will be available at the stations in question within the next 12 months. However, the needs of the north city centre area will be kept under review according as the additional manpower now in training and being recruited becomes available for assignment to stations.

The allocation of manpower between foot patrols and other duties in any particular area is a matter for the local Garda officers. The number of gardaí on foot patrol in the north city centre area of Dublin varies from time to time and depends on factors such as available resources, local circumstances, other demands on Garda services and the time of day or night.
