Vol. 345 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Monaghan Drainage Scheme.

357.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of moneys paid by Monaghan County Council to the Office of Public Works in respect of the Glyde and Dee drainage scheme in 1981, 1982, 1983; and the amount of moneys expended in County Monaghan in those years.

The moneys paid in 1981, 1982 and 1983 by Monaghan County Council to the Office of Public Works in respect of maintenance of the Glyde and Dee drainage scheme amount to £18,012.45, £39,267.14 and nil, respectively. The expenditure on this service applicable to County Monaghan, calculated as prescribed by section 37 of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, was £40,700.00 in 1981, £44,800.00 in 1982 and £30,000.00 in respect of 1983 (to 31 August).

Where a drainage scheme benefits lands in two or more counties expenditure on maintenance is not recorded on a county basis.

358.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Monaghan was only employed for eight weeks this year on the Glyde and Dee drainage scheme.

Because of the need to reduce the burden of the local authorities who must repay the cost of drainage maintenance, the period of employment was curtailed this year for seasonal workers on the Glyde and Dee drainage scheme.
