Vol. 345 No. 6

Written Answers. - Public Funding of Golf Clubs.

276.

asked the Minister for Labour the amount of public funding allocated by any means to golf clubs in the country during 1983, 1981 and 1982.

Golf clubs have received assistance in 1981, 1982 and 1983 under the following schemes which fall within my area of responsibility: The grant scheme for youth employment, the work experience programme and the employment incentive scheme administered by my Department and the community youth training programme, administered by AnCO.

Under the grant scheme for youth employment, which was operated by the Department of Education up to the end of 1982, an amount of £459,537 was approved in grants from the beginning of 1981 up to 28 October 1983, in respect of employment of young people on development works at 30 golf clubs throughout the country. The amount paid to date in respect of these projects is £326,869.

Under the work experience programme, allowances are paid to young people receiving work experience. From the beginning of 1981 up to 28 October 1983 allowances totalling approximately £11,500 were paid to 26 young people under work experience programmes in operation at 16 golf clubs.

A sum of £400 was paid to a golf club under the employment incentive scheme in respect of the recruitment of an additional employee for a repair and sales shop. The payment related to the period November 1982 to February 1983.

Three projects involving golf clubs have been assisted, or are being assisted, in the period in question under the community youth training programme operated by AnCO. The total amount involved in payments to trainees on the projects is estimated at £16,000.

Question No. 277 postponed.
