Vol. 345 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

458.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of successful applicants that will be called for Garda training from the present recruitment plan; the number that have been called to date; and when the present list will expire.

Limerick East): To date a total of 305 candidates have been appointed to the Force from the most recent recruitment competition and a further 48 candidates are due to be appointed on 23 November.

The total number to be appointed from this competition and the length of time the lists of qualified candidates will last will depend mainly on the level of recruitment to the Force in 1984, which has not yet been finally decided.

459.

asked the Minister for Justice if there is a prohibition on recruitment to the Garda Síochána of persons living in local authority houses; if it is permissible for a member of the Garda Síochána to reside in a local authority house, either as a married person or with his or her parents; and if the Garda authorities or his Department have a policy in this regard.

Limerick East): There is no prohibition on the recruitment to the Garda Síochána of persons living in local authority houses and it is permissible for members of the Force to live in such houses. There is no policy in the Garda Síochána or in my Department which seeks to differentiate in any way between people living in local authority housing and residents of other types of housing.
