Vol. 345 No. 8

Written Answers - Galway Television Reception.

283.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give one years credit on their television licence to people in the Mervue area of Galway in view of his failure to provide RTE reception without interference since the erection of the adjacent mast by his Department; and the action he is taking to provide satisfactory television reception there.

RTE is responsible for investigating and, where necessary, improving television and radio reception. Neither RTE nor my Department has had any complaint of poor television reception in the Mervue area in recent months. There were earlier complaints and I indicated in reply to a question on this subject on 1 June 1983 (Official Report, volume 343, Column 350/351) that my Department would cooperate with RTE in any practicable way it could to resolve any problems in this area.

The requirement to hold a television licence arises from the possession of a television set and is not related in any way to the quality of television reception. The question of granting any rebate or refund for any period of poor reception does not therefore arise.
