Vol. 346 No. 8

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

346.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to have the telephone meter of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 rechecked.

The meter has been checked twice this year already and it has been established that the persistent complaints of overcharging in this case are due to reliance on inadequate private records.

347.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin.

I very much regret the delay in providing telephone service for the person named. However, it will not be possible to meet this application until necessary additional engineering work is carried out.

The objective of the Department's current telephone development programme is to provide a fully satisfactory telephone service nationally in terms of both quality and availability by the end of 1984 and it is expected that service will be provided for the person named about the middle of next year. It was expected that service would be provided earlier. Unfortunately it was not possible to do so because of the need to divert staff to other urgent work, including maintenance.

Service will be provided for the person named as soon as possible but it is unlikely that the necessary cabling can be completed before the middle of next year.

I very much regret the delay in providing telephones. However by the end of 1984 the vast bulk of applications will be met on demand.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange to have the telephone accounts issued to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny re-examined urgently in view of the fact that he feels that he is not making the calls being charged against him.

This subscriber's telephone accounts have been investigated and were found to be correct. The meter and associated equipment were also checked and found to be in good working order.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason that persons (details supplied) in County Galway are obliged to pay telephone rental of £53.45 per quarter; the reason a night service has not been provided for them; the date on which their telephone will become automatic; if he will direct his Department in the meantime to provide a night service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Telephone rentals are assessed by reference to the radial distance between the customers premises and the telephone exchange. The rental being charged to the persons named has been checked and found to be correct.

It is not possible to provide night service for the people named because the local postmaster is unwilling to operate a night service and there are no vacancies on the night switching circuits to other exchanges.

It is expected that automatic service will be introduced during the second half of next year. Continuous service will then become available to all customers at the exchange. I do not propose to introduce night service at the exchange in the meantime. However should a vacancy arise on the night switching circuits to other exchanges the claims of the people named will be borne in mind having regard also, of course, to the claim of other applicants.
