asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of each corps and formation of the permanent Defence Forces, their establishment and strength by rank and corps on 30 September 1982, 31 December 1982, and 30 September 1983.

The number of members of the Reserve Defence Force who attended for annual training from the beginning of January until the 31 October of this years is as follows:— Reserve of Officers (First Line), Reserve of Men (First Line) — 476; An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil (Officers and Men) — 7,886; An Slua Muirí (Officers and Men) — 190.

These figures represent 50 per cent, 48 per cent and 53 per cent of the respective strengths on the 31 October, 1983.

Apart from the exceptions mentioned hereunder all members of the Reserve Defence Force who attended for annual training qualified for the full rate of gratuity. Six members of the First Line Reserve did not, for various reasons, fulfil the conditions prescribed in Defence Force Regulations for payment of the full rate of gratuity. Each person involved qualified for a reduced rate of gratuity.
