Vol. 347 No. 10

Written Answers. - Wexford Convent Schools.

332.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware that all student places at both the Loreto and Presentation Convent secondary schools, Wexford, are filled up to 1990 and that a significant number of girls are being denied the right to a convent school education; and the action she proposes to take to ensure that space is made available for all applicants.

334.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware that both convent schools in Wexford town are fully booked up to 1990 and that there is a waiting list of 200 for that year; the steps she will take to ensure that adequate space is available for boys and girls for secondary education in the immediate future and in the long term in Wexford town; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 332 and 334 together.

My Department's aim in a post-primary centre such as Wexford town where there are a number of schools is to ensure that the centre, as a whole, has enough school accommodation to meet the demand for places. There are three post-primary schools catering for girls in Wexford town and my Department are satisfied that, between them, the three schools concerned will be able to accommodate all the girls seeking post-primary places for the foreseeable future. The authorities of the two secondary schools for girls have intimated that they do not wish to expand further.

Boys are catered for in three post-primary schools in Wexford town also and the accommodation for them in those schools is adequate.
