Vol. 349 No. 10

Written Answers. - House Inspections.

481.

asked the Minister for the Environment the total number of housing inspectors employed by his Department in this State in January 1980, 1983 and 1984; the number of such inspectors allocated to County Galway; the number of inspections completed throughout the country on 31 December 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 and for the first three months of 1984; the number of inspections done in County Galway during the aforementioned periods; the amount of time that elapses between the notification of an inspection and the date on which this inspection is carried out; the reasons for the delay in carrying out inspections; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total number of inspectors employed on new house and improvement grant work on 1 January 1980, 1983 and 1984 were 77, 58 and 55 respectively. It is not possible to indicate the number of these inspectors assigned to County Galway on the dates in question because the assignments of individual inspectors may relate to more than one county and are altered from time to time. The information requested in relation to numbers of inspections actually carried out is not readily available in my Department.

In relation to the latter part of the question it is assumed that the Deputy is referring to the period between the receipt of a notification in the Department that work is completed and the carrying out of an inspection. The general length of time taken for inspections is estimated to be four to six weeks; the exact time in particular cases depends on a number of factors, the principal one being the inspector's workload at the time an inspection is requested.
