Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 511 and 512 together.

Records are kept in a form which relates to competitions rather than calendar years. The tabular statement which follows sets out particulars in relation to the number of applications received for the 1983 recruitment competition; the number who passed the qualifying examination; the number called for interview; the number successful at interview; the number called for medical examination and, where appropriate, oral Irish test; and the number appointed to date.

Present plans are to appoint approximately 200 more recruits during 1984 but the precise numbers will depend on the level of vacancies arising from resignations, retirements and deaths during the year. No decision has been made at this stage as to the total number to be appointed from the 1983 competition or the length of time the lists of qualified candidates will last, but the matter is at present under review in consultation with the Garda authorities.
