Written Answers. - Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act.

521.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total amount of rent subsidies paid under the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act in each year since 1982, in each county council or county borough administrative area.

522.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the landlords who have benefited from rent subsidies paid by his Department since the introduction of the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act, 1982; and the money paid out by his Department since the inception of this Act.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 521 and 522 together.

Statistics are not kept in such a form as would provide the total amounts of rent allowances which have been paid to claimants resident in particular county council or county borough administrative areas.

The allowances are paid to the tenants of formerly rent controlled dwellings where on de-control the terms of the tenancy have ben fixed by the Court or by the Rent Tribunal and particulars of the new rent have been requested by the landlord with the local housing authority. Beyond verifying that these requirements have been complied with no further information is necessary in relation to landlords to enable payment of an allowance to be made.

The amounts of rent allowance paid in each year since 1982 are as follows: 1982, £237; 1983, £305,040; 1984, £309,841. Total, £615,118. The payments covered the period 26 July 1982 to 7 April 1984.
