The 1981 census of population provides the most recent data for the comparison of unemployment rates on a county basis. Provisional results from that census indicate a total labour force of 1,245,996 of whom 111,198, or 8.9 per cent were unemployed. If corresponding unemployment rates are calculated from the provisional results for individual counties, those having the highest rates are: Donegal, 19.7; Kerry, 11.7; Louth, 11.4; Wexford, 11.2; Mayo, 9.9.
