Vol. 352 No. 3

Written Answers. - Glen of Imaal Accident Compensation.

461.

asked the Minister for Defence if full compensation has been paid in all cases as a result of the accident in the Glen of Imaal on 26 May 1977; if not, if he will outline when payment will be made; and the reason the delay has occurred.

All claims made under the Army Pensions Acts have been met. This entails payment of allowances to two widows and their children and a disability pension to one of the injured. Gratuities of one year's pay due under the Defence Forces (Pensions) Schemes have been paid to the next-of-kin of all five men who were killed.

Additional claims for compensation were made by two of the personnel who were injured and by the next-of-kin of four of those who were killed. Settlements have been made so far in five of these cases. The remaining case was the subject of a High Court hearing and a subsequent appeal to the supreme Court. Payment of a substantial interim amount was made in this case on 21 February 1984. Judgment on the Supreme Court appeal was delivered on 21 June 1984 and payment of the balance due will be made at the earliest possible date.
