Vol. 352 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pollution from Piggeries.

561.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the urgent need for new legislation to have air pollution and hygiene regulations in regard to the intensive pig industry in this country; the present regulations if any; if there are any EEC guidelines; and if his Department adopted these.

Stringent requirements are imposed by my Department in relation to the storage of slurry and effluent from piggeries for which investment aid is paid under the farm modernisation scheme. The question of legislation dealing with controls on pollution from piggeries generally is not a matter for my Department.
