Vol. 353 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Coast Erosion.

15.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a special allocation to Kerry County Council to deal with the problem of the coastal erosion at Fenit, Tralee, County Kerry.

I understand from Kerry County Council that they propose to undertake minor works which are designed to protect the road in question at Fenit and to finance them from their own resources. The question of an Exchequer grant does not arise.

Is the Minister aware that there is a very serious matter involved and that a request was made to the Department in 1981 for funds? If a similar request is repeated will the Minister consider making the funds available?

There is no correspondence in my Department from Kerry County Council on this matter.

I disagree with that. Only two weeks ago the county council carried out the coastal protection work in the Fenit area so as to protect the road there.

That was a matter for the county council. All I am saying is that they did not apply to my Department for a grant.

I understood the Minister to say that Kerry County Council did nothing about coastal protection work at Fenit.

I did not say that.
