547.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the amount of money known to have been lost to his Department through acts of fraud emanating from (a) within and (b) outside his Department in the years 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983; and the general areas in his Department in which such acts of fraud occurred.

There have been no cases of money known to have been lost to my Department through acts of fraud during the years in question.

However, in that period there were two cases of loss of official moneys through theft and misrepresentation. In 1981 a sum of £946 was stolen in the London Embassy but police inquiries were unable to establish the identity of the person or persons who carried out the theft. Also in 1981 a salary cheque for a member of my Department was cashed by an unauthorised person resulting in a loss of £57 to the Department. Garda inquiries were unable to establish the identify of the person who illegally cashed the cheque.
