Vol. 353 No. 8

Written Answers. - Solid Fuel Cookers.

545.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he will consider issuing a ministerial order declaring that part of the standard as laid down by the IIRS (details supplied) for solid fuel cookers be made mandatory in relation to draught domestic solid fuel cookers with integral boilers, as such a mandatory ministerial order would greatly protect indigenous employment in this area.

I am empowered by section 44 of the Industrial Research and Standards Act, 1961, by order to make Irish standards mandatory only where considerations of public safety are involved. In the case of the standard for solid fuel cookers, however, I have been advised that the safety considerations are not of sufficient magnitude to justify a mandatory standard. Accordingly, I do not propose to make the standard mandatory.
