Dáil Éireann díospóireacht -

Vol. 354 No. 1

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 8, 2 and 9. By agreement, the Dáil shall sit later than 9 p.m. today and not later than 10.30 p.m. and business shall be interrupted at 10 p.m.

On a point of order——

Private Members' Business shall be Nos. 18 and 65, which shall be taken between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. If a division is challenged on items Nos. 18 and 65 the taking of such division shall be postponed until 8.30 p.m. tomorrow night.

I raised a point of order but the Chair allowed the Taoiseach to move on to the next item.

The Deputy will not find the Chair unreasonable.

I wish to raise an important matter in the House.

The Deputy will have plenty of time to do that. I must deal with the Order of Business.

I am seeking the guidance of the Chair. I asked the Chair for permission to raise a matter as a matter of urgency but the Chair feels that it is not a matter of urgency. How can we resolve that? I am convinced, as I am sure the Taoiseach is, that it is a matter of urgency.

I ruled on all Private Notice Questions put down to me and my private secretary, either over the phone or personally, explained the position to each Deputy. I am sorry but I am not going to allow a squabble or a row to develop on this matter.

If the Chair listened to me it might make him change his mood.

You are out of order.

You only wish to consult with one side in a matter like this——

I am prepared to discuss this with Deputy Power if he comes to my office, in accordance with long standing——

It should be raised today——

It is vital that the rules and order of the House be upheld. That is what I was elected to this Chair to do.

By discussing it with you will we have an opportunity to raise it today——

I am not saying that. I will discuss it with the Deputy if he comes to my office.

It is proposed to take Nos. 8, 2 and 9. By agreement, the Dáil shall sit later than 9 p.m. today and not later than 10.30 p.m. and business shall be interrupted at p.m. Private Members' Business shall be Nos. 18 and 65 which shall be taken from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. If a division is challenged on items Nos. 18 and 65, the taking of such divisions shall be postponed until 8.30 p.m. tomorrow night. Are the arrangements for todays business and for the taking of divisions agreed?

Agreed.

In case our discussion with you may not prove fruitful, Deputy Power and I give notice that we wish to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

If the Deputy writes a letter I will give him the full facts.

In view of the serious and deteriorating unemployment problem in Dundalk town, I wish to raise on the Adjournment——

I will communicate with Deputy Power.

Do either the Taoiseach or the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry propose to make a statement on or to give time to debate the Government's rejection of Bord Iascaigh Mhara's rescue package deal which would alleviate many of the problems being experienced by fishermen in order that they might restructure their loans——

I am sorry, Deputy but——

I am coming to the serious part.

You are a long time coming to it.

As a former Minister for Fisheries, a Cheann Comhairle——

That does not arise.

In Donegal thousands of jobs are in jeopardy. Do the Government propose to liquidate Bord Iascaigh Mhara?

I am ruling that out of order.

I wish to raise the matter on the Adjournment.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

Last week I sought to raise on the Adjournment the very critical unemployment situation in Nenagh, particularly arising from the liquidation of Castle Brand to which very peculiar circumstances attach. I repeat my request today.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

In case my request was forgotten in the chaos, I wish to raise on the Adjournment the serious and deteriorating unemployment problem in Dundalk.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment the very serious situation in the Tallaght area due to the non-delivery of social welfare cheques. What has the Minister done about this? In the event of the same thing happening this week——

I will communicate with the Deputy.
